(Not necessarily a dragon, but who cares, right? Also, for an easier reading experience: Click this.)
Biology:
Do note that this essence isn't actually essence, it's just the easiest and closest way to define it. This will be split into three parts since organization is nice.
Hatched: The 'Finctus' (Hatched) are the ones who have hatched from the seedling. They tend to exhibit sentience, and are about on the same level as human intelligence. At this point the entirety of their stored mana has been converted into their essence. Their essence is composed of a sort of omni-essence (referred to as OE from this point on.), capable of effecting a great many things. Attempts have been made to isolate this essence, but all have failed. The OE is simply essence that seems to rapidly change/mutate into different types. They loose the ability to convert mana into this form after hatching effectively stunting their growth. If part of them is ever detached, the detached item stops mutating, becoming almost instantly incompatible with the original being. They gradually loose their ability to manipulate their OE over their lifespan, until it is entirely impossible for them to do so.
Hatching: The process of hatching is a strange sight, and a very brief one. First, the Mustus (Fancy word for Seedling.) must either decide to hatch early, or wait until it's forced to hatch after a certain amount of time. (Exact number unknown.) Second, the seedling draws it's mana pool close to it's center extremely rapidly, causing it to glow extremely bright (often blinding nearby creatures) and 'burning out' the seedling and making it nearly useless for mana storage. Lastly, it's compressed mana suddenly, and violently expands in all directions briefly, (otherwise known as an explosion.) and depending on how much mana was stored, the expansion's force scales up. Most of the time it's enough to singe researcher's eyebrows from a couple of feet away. The mana then collapses back onto itself forming a vague spherical shape. It's assumed at this point it's altered into the substance the Finctus (Fancy word for hatched) use for their bodies. Additional research required to determine how this is done is preferable.
Seedling: The 'Mustus' (Seedling) are composed of a crystal structure, seeming extremely compact. While this make them very durable, it also means any ruptures inside them are almost always fatal, causing a sort of cascade as all of the mana stored tries to escape from said crack, widening it and allowing even more through until it's either a pile of shards, or empty. It is composed of a strange (organic?) material capable of storing large amounts of mana in a small space, attributing to the fact that their mana storage abilities excel far past most other means. Unfortunately, the crystal the seedlings are made of looses this ability whenever the Finctus (Hatched) hatches or dies.
History:
(WIP, woot)
Appearance:
Elders (Defined by living far past their expected lifespan.) are the ones that managed to alter their very being, overcoming their constant essence drain. They are otherwise akin to adults, though often seem to appear extremely dulled, and their shifting abilities are completely and utterly gone, their form permanent.
Adults (Defined by 1/3rd of their aura remaining.) are near the end of their life cycle. Their aura is duller then usual, and their shifting abilities are sub-par, it takes 'essence' to actually change their form. Otherwise, they are almost completely alike to newly 'hatched'.
Children (Defined by hatching.) are the newly 'hatched' of the species, they have a quite bright aura, and seem to be entirely composed of constantly shifting 'essence'. Their 'essence' is able to change drastically, altering their form extremely quickly. Therefore, their form cannot be defined absolutely.
Seedlings (Having yet to hatch.) are best defined as small crystal like objects, about the size of a bean. They often glow faintly from the inside, and this glow signifies how much mana it has absorbed/stored. They also often times are one singular color, it's currently unknown the effect of the color on the biology of them. Other than influencing their color for the rest of their life, that is.
Trivia:
•Seedlings are famed for having extremely high mana capacities, as such, wizards have been known to use them as mana batteries, albeit it's difficult to do so due to nearby seedlings constantly draining the power from spells, and trying to get seedlings to release the mana.
•They can actually change their very being, although this takes a massive expenditure of 'essence.' It's how the elders have survived for so long.
•It is in fact impossible for the species to gain 'essence' after their seedling stage, even with the alteration of their being.
•Seedlings are in fact semi-sentient before 'hatching', they're vaguely aware of what is happening around them, but are incapable of affecting anything in any way.
History:
The Essentia-Forma started out on a land-locked area named 'Terraecgenesis', roughly translated to 'Ground from birth'(?). According to records found, (mind you, all in their language.) fully translated are:
(Anno CCCII) The Essentia-Formas were made from the carpenter(?), in the 'Ground from birth'. They stayed around the towns, absorbing the magic from the air as they increased in number. They remained unobtrusive mostly, tending to themselves before suddenly attempting to (talk? Barter?) with the carpenters. They established (friendships? Connections?) with the carpenters.
There's more to all of this, but unfortunately it's yet to be translated, some of it's partially translated and even then most of it's not. I'll make sure the researchers update this as we progress. Here's some that we partially wrote, some we translated from their arrival.
(Anno DDXXVI)
(Mane XXXII)
The Mustus' have survived the voyage across the great sea. We've begun to send out the Emoliebanturs, luckily this land is rich in magic, it should be a good home for the Mustus'.
(Mane XXXVII)
Everything is as predicted, fortunately. The Mustus have taken well to the land, according to the Emoliebanturs. There are strange creatures though. Winged serpents. Also carpenters seem to be inhabiting this place.
